What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by well-defined, red, scaly plaques on the skin with silvery scales. It is caused by an overactive immune system response, leading to accelerated skin cell proliferation. It is not contagious and can affect anyone. Other than the skin, it can also affect the nails and joints. Those with moderate to severe psoriasis may also have an increased risk of developing heart disease or stroke.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Symptoms Of Psoriasis
- Classic features are raised, well-demarcated patches covered in silvery or white scales.
- The rashes are commonly found on the scalp, elbows, knees, lower back and buttocks
- Nails may be involved; with features including nail pitting, thickening, discolouration and separation from the nail bed (“onycholysis”)
- Joints: Sometimes psoriasis can cause joint inflammation, leading to “psoriatic arthritis”. This presents with joint stiffness, swelling and pain.
Diagnosis
- Physical examination: Your dermatologist will carefully inspect your skin, nails, and scalp for signs of psoriasis. They may also ask about your medical and family history to determine any possible genetic predisposition or underlying factors.
- Skin biopsy: In some cases, a skin biopsy might be necessary to confirm the diagnosis. This involves taking a small sample of the affected skin, which will be analysed under a microscope to rule out other skin conditions with similar symptoms.
Treatment
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition that can flare up episodically. Although there is no cure, psoriasis can be controlled with appropriate treatment to reduce frequency and severity of flare-ups.
There are many treatment options available in Singapore for psoriasis and the treatment depends on the type of psoriasis, the areas affected and the severity and/or extent of the condition. These treatments include topical creams, phototherapy, systemic (oral) medication or biologic therapy that targets specific aspects of the immune system.
Types Of Psoriasis
Plaque Psoriasis
The most common type is characterised by raised, red patches covered in silvery scales.
Guttate Psoriasis
Typically affecting children and young adults, this type presents as small, drop-like spots on the skin.

Appears as smooth, shiny, and red patches, usually found in skin folds, such as the groin or armpits.
Pustular Psoriasis
Presents as pus-filled blisters surrounded by inflamed skin.
Erythrodermic Psoriasis
A rare but severe form of psoriasis, causing widespread redness, scaling, and itching of the skin.
Nail Psoriasis
